Perhaps this is one of the main reasons why tourists travel here in large numbers every year. Chittorgarh Fort was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013.

What’s interesting is that Chittorgarh Fort was once also known as the Water Fort as it had about 84 water bodies but this was way back in history. However, today, out of these 84 water bodies only about 22 are left.

The Chittorgarh Fort is also believed to be a haunted site as a great many lives were lost here due to the Rajput Pratha (a ritual or tradition) of Jauhar. Due to these talks going on, several people avoid visiting the fort during the evening hours.

The best time to visit the Chittorgarh Fort is between the months of October and March. Bappa Rawal (734-753 AD) the legendary founder of the Sisodia dynasty conquered Chittor from Maurya dynasty.

Over the centuries the Rajputs managed to recover their fort twice from Allauddin Khilji and Bahadur Shah of Malwa but in the third conquest by Akbar, the fort finally got annexed to the Mughal empire.

Rajputs preferred death to dishonor.
