Deepavali or Diwali is the festival of lights, celebrated all over India. According to legend, the return of legendary King Rama, after fourteen years of exile, is being celebrated to the city of Ayodhya. It is also the day dedicated to Lakhsmi, goddess of prosperity and fortune. The lights, terracotta lamps called diya, are lit around and inside houses, in the streets and on rivers to point the way to Lakhsmi and in remembrance of the luminaires that welcomed Rama upon his return to Ayodhya. The entrance of the houses is decorated with designs of colored powders and rice. In the previous days, houses and shops are polished and cleaned to perfection. Merchants are offering their divinity masters books and sweets to customers and suppliers. Exchanging gifts with friends, particularly metal objects: jewelry, precious coins or tableware. Fireworks are made on roofs of houses and spend the night playing cards with family or friends.
