Buddhist stupas, which are hemispherical buildings generally housing relics of the Buddha or his followers, are synonymous with the town of Sanchi. Emperor Ashoka gave the command to build the Sanchi Stupas in order to disseminate and protect the Buddhist ideology. In the same way that these architectural marvels have protected Mauryan-era history and art, Sanchi has been preserving these stunning and holy structures.

Global audiences have also been fascinated and awed by the countless stupas, temples, monasteries, and an Ashokan pillar. The Mahastupa really bears the designation of “World Heritage Site” from UNESCO.

Within a 30-kilometer radius of Sanchi, there are numerous other undiscovered Buddha locations that offer important teachings. A 17-acre theme park called Buddha Jambudweep is located directly in front of the Sanchi Museum run by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which explores the lives and teachings of Gautam Buddha and Emperor Ashoka.
