The National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary, located in India, is a protected area established primarily for the conservation of the critically endangered Gharial crocodile (Gavialis gangeticus). It also serves as a habitat for other endangered species such as the Ganges river dolphin (Platanista gangetica gangetica) and various species of turtles.
The sanctuary is situated along the Chambal River, which flows through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. This riverine ecosystem provides a crucial breeding ground and refuge for the gharials, which are one of the largest crocodilians and primarily inhabit freshwater rivers and lakes.
Apart from gharials and dolphins, the sanctuary is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including various species of fish, birds, and mammals. Efforts to conserve and protect this sanctuary involve measures such as habitat restoration, anti-poaching patrols, and community engagement to raise awareness about the importance of preserving this unique ecosystem.
