House Boats are enormous, leisurely going, exotic barges built for pure pleasure travel. They are contemporary iterations of the classic Kettuvallams. The words “kettu” and “vallam” both refer to tying. Before, rice, spices, and other items were transported between Kuttanad and the Cochin port using these Kettuvallams. Then, a caustic black resin made from cooked cashew nuts is applied to this structure. And it endures for ages. The native carpenters make house boats using age-old principles and methods.
