History –
Hawa Mahal was built-in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh of the Kachhwaha Rajput Dynasty. The beautiful heritage structure was built for royal women. Then the strict Purdah system was followed, due to which the ladies could get an eyeful of the streets and busy city life while they remain away from views of the general public. It is a five-storey building built in the shape of the crown of Lord Krishna with 953 jharokhas or fine lattice windows and screened balconies made from pink and red sandstone.
Architectural Charm –
The maharaja assigned the construction of this palace to Lal Chand Ustad as architect. It is a unique five-storey pyramidal palace with a height of 15 meters from its elevated base. As you explore the monuments, you will notice the design of the building showcases an excellent blend of Hindu Rajput and Islamic Mughal architecture. You will see the fluted pillars, floral patterns, and domed canopies along with arches and stone inlay filigree works. Do you look for the colorful glassworks on the second floor of the Mahal?
The structure comprises 953 jharokhas, few are made of wood. These windows allow the air to circular naturally and fountains in the middle of each chamber make the entire structure air-conditioned during the extremely hot summers too. The entrance of Hawa Mahal leads to a spacious courtyard which is surrounded on three sides by two-storey buildings. The five-storey structure has only ramps and no stairs. The top three storeys are only as wide as a single room. Once you reach the top of Hawa Mahal on the Jaipur Evening Tour, you can enjoy panoramic views of the city.
