A traditional and well-known kind of folk entertainment, katputli is a string puppet show. A wooden puppet is essentially what a kathapalli is. One of Rajasthan’s top tourist attractions is the Kathputli dance and performance. Rajasthan’s famous string puppets, known as kathputhlis in the native tongue, are made mostly in the cities of Jaipur and Jodhpur. These puppets are created by the Bhatt community, who also uses them in performances.

The puppets are typically two feet tall and have wooden heads with big eyes and a nose. The rest of the body is covered in vibrant, colourful cloth pieces and stuffed clothing that also allows for freedom of movement. The puppets, unless they are horse riders, have no legs and are dressed in a long skirt with pleats. The manipulator’s hands are connected to the threads from the puppet’s two hands by a long thread from the head, which extends to the manipulator before joining the middle.

The themes that are performed revolve around Rajasthani historical tales or regional customs, while the clothes are regional and traditional. The court dancer, horse stunt rider, and snake charmer are a few necessary personalities and objects. These puppets are created by puppeteers from the wandering Bhatt communities, who have been performing for a very long time.

One of the state’s well-known sources of entertainment is the puppets in Rajasthan. A Rajasthani society of agricultural labourers practises the art of puppetry. These people, known as the Bhats, have ties to Rajasthani string puppetry in order to continue on their ancestral trade. They originate from the Nagaur neighbourhood in the Marwar district, but they travel all around the nation to display their talent. They also go by the moniker “kathputliwalas,” and they typically put on puppet shows in the late hours.
